8 Simple Ways to Stay Active on Your Orlando Vacation

You’re on vacation visiting a new town with new restaurants to try and different foods to eat. There’s so much to do yet you’re in relaxation mode. No wonder it’s hard to stay healthy while on vacation. Casting away your normal exercise routine is too easy. Definitely enjoy your vacation, but you can also make sure to stay active by choosing active things to do. Here’s how Orlandoans stay active, many of these activities are free or low cost, and provide fun family bonding time.

New research shows that even little things, like taking the stairs or adding an extra block to your usual walking route, can make a big improvement on overall health. Even if you’re taking a break from your daily gym routine during your vacation, any little bit of physical activity offers excellent benefits regardless of your fitness level.

Hit the Trails

Walk, run, or bike on Orlando’s beautiful trails. The Orlando Urban Trail is a short 2.5 mile trail that winds through downtown scenic areas and cultural attractions. Longer trails like the West Orange Trail offer great view of Florida wildlife. Didn’t bring your bike? Rent bikes through Juice Bike Share in downtown Orlando.

Go Dancing

Learn how to salsa and bachata at The Balcony downtown. Tickets are $7 per person (18+ only) for a one hour class open to all levels. You can also show off your moves at some of Orlando’s most popular nightclubs including Mangos on I-Drive and The Edison at Disney Springs.

Explore I-Drive

International Drive stretches for miles and is home to amazing shops, amusement parks, an observation and other fun entertainment options. Instead of driving to each of these, slip on some comfy shoes and enjoy a walking tour of the International Drive attractions.

Kayak on the Springs

Arm day is always more fun in a kayak. Rent canoes or kayaks at Wekiva Springs and give your arms and back a good workout as you paddle through the clear waters. Along the way you may spot Florida wildlife including birds, turtles, and fish.

Attend a Yoga Class

Get zen while on vacation as you work on flexibility and balance. For just $5 a class you can enjoy Sunday morning yoga at beautiful Lake Eola in downtown Orlando. When you’re done, stroll through the Orlando Farmers Market for some fresh veggies, local honey, and other goods.

Bring the Dog

Vacations are always more fun when the dogs get to come along, plus you’ll have a great reminder to get up and go for a walk. Lake Eola in downtown Orlando has a one mile paved trail that is perfect for a brisk walk with your dog, or play a game of fetch at the Dr. Phillips Community Dog Park. Be sure to bring water for both of you.

Visit the Theme Parks

The average American takes anywhere from 3,000 to 4,000 steps a day. A full day at Disney can easily add up to over 16,000 steps! You might break a sweat but you’ll be having too much fun to care as you explore all the animals, countries, and magical lands.

Go for a Swim

Swimming is the perfect low impact activity, plus it’s probably already on your vacation agenda. You don’t have to swim laps to reap the benefits of swimming; aerobic and resistance training exercises work perfectly in the pool. Just make sure you use sunscreen to protect against the intense Florida sun rays.
